VIZ.,
Art, adventures and inquiries into transcendence
#009 March 2019

Welcome to this issue of VIZ.,
My heart goes out to all the people directly affected by the recent tragedy in CHCH.
Its plain old selfishness that leads to this kind of act.
As one of my mentors, Khela Tirtha pointed out wisely, It was his inability to deal with his inability to deal with diversity. (paraphrased)
Had the killer been able to either accommodate peoples differences or at least deal with his weakness, this wouldn't have happened.
He reminds us all of our own weakness in this regard and has personally inspired me to take new actions towards accommodating and celebrating diversity.
I turned my anger away from him and towards my own racism.
I know my discomfort with people from overseas is selfish.
I don't act on this discomfort and people wouldn't call me racist.
I don't dis people with darker skin or more closed eyes but I know But I don't go out of my way to make friends.
I guess I want to be neutral.
Indifference is another word for neutral. The opposite of love isn't hate. Its indifference.
So is it possible to be neutral and not racist?
I don't know. What I do know is I cant.
We treat people how we see them and if we see them with indifference we will certainly behave indifferently towards them.
I believe racism is a mental health issue.
Its a disability that lives in the mind.
Its thoughts.
I believe the solution is education and training in spiritual knowledge.
The Bhagavad Gita states
The humble sage, by virtue of true knowledge, sees with equal vision a learned and gentle brahmana, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater [outcaste] .
This implies that a humble sage also sees with equal vision all types of people. Restoring this kind of eyesight is the goal of the bhakti yoga practice I'm committed to.
