This is a short issue of SOUL ON FIRE
I am organzing a graffiti event this saturday and want to spend more time on that. So I thought I’d share a short but powerful reflection about serenity and opinions.
Most things we take for granted as true are really not.
Imagine a “punk walking alongside a business man” We will automatically make a up a story about their relationship. Noone would just accept it as two people walking together. Notice how you profile everyone in a moment and make a story about them! But what’s accurate?
When I was studying to be a security person I learned how to speak objectively. You state those things that are plain and factual like hair colour, hieght etc. What they actually did is what’s important. How you feel about it is totally irrelevent. What a breath of fresh air!
As human beings we think, feel and talk from our interpretations rather than truth.
If you asked me what my pet peeve is, I would say “people talking like they are right” Even more annoying for me is when people talk as though others are wrong.
Notice how during lockdown everyone had a different approach and it created division and solidarity. What if people accepted differences without making stories about people? Its possible to co-exist with people who act different. Underneath all we do as people are the exact same values and needs! So actually all there is is different ways of living them out.
The key to serenity is to not be a walking bag of knives and just listen for what’s true, stop interpreting people as wrong and focus on who you’re being at each moment.
Slogans like the following help me to be serene like a windless flat lake rather than a spiky bag of opinions:
Mind your own business
Love what is
I’m no fixed way
What actually happened?
Question everything (especially yourself)
My understanding is just that and it may change (hopefully it is)
An unanalysed life is not worth living
Don’t just look good, make a difference
Hurt people hurt people
Just listen
I accept 2 things as true - A loving God and living beings, and everything is totally relative. People who take pride in their interpretations and beliefs about stuff involuntarily limit themselves and others.
Anything is possible. Most things arent true. Get real and be peaceful:D
Got value from reading this? Let me know!
Heres my event if you’re in Auckland this weekend!
