Welcome to this issue of Soul on Fire!
It recently occurred to me I have never showcased any woman on my zine. “How biased and unprogressive” I thought.
At first, I resolved to do a heroic monthly issue dedicated to female artists but then I realized that was still kinda matriarchal, so I decided I’ll just make this issue the inauguration of a new direction for the zine that showcases people based on their talent and knowledge rather than their biology.
In this issue, you get to hear from Hannah Gil who brings the ancient yoga texts to life through Disney style drawings, a short but sweet playlist, a poem, and a video about the Hare Krsna mantra.

Strange Is The Path When You Offer Love
Mirabai, a princess, was a devotee of Lord Krishna, she was in love with him from her early childhood and her poems are of love and devotion to her Lord. Her devotion of Lord Krishna made her go against the traditions and customs of her time and made Mirabai is the most famous of the women bhakta poets of north India.
Do not mention the name of love,
O my simple-minded companion.
Strange is the path
When you offer your love.
Your body is crushed at the first step.
If you want to offer love
Be prepared to cut off your head
And sit on it.
Be like the moth,
Which circles the lamp and offers its body.
Be like the deer, which, on hearing the horn,
Offers its head to the hunter.
Be like the partridge,
Which swallows burning coals
In love of the moon.
Be like the fish
Which yields up its life
When separated from the sea.
Be like the bee,
Entrapped in the closing petals of the lotus.
Mira's lord is the courtly Giridhara.
She says: Offer your mind
To those lotus feet.
Podcast🎙️

In this podcast, Hanna talks about how she started practicing Krsna consciousness, her art practice, and her sudden fame since starting her Instagram page.

In the podcast, I asked Hannah what’s on her playlist and she said lots of Jahnavi and lots of Acyuta Gopi so this issue’s playlist is just gonna introduce you to those artists.
I personally take a lot of inspiration from these kirtaniyas. Check them out and let their music purify and uplift you.
