As human beings we don't know what we want. We want happiness but we scorn people who seem to have it. Ever wondered about that?
The reason for this is the 3 modes of nature; goodness, passion and ignorance.
Let me introduce you to the modes. I have included Urmilas overview given in Brisbane as downloadable a podcast.
These modes influence literally everything we see and percieve through our 6 senses - food, music, emotion, colours, sports, art, sounds, conversations, knowledge and even times of the day are covered by these modes.
These modes are constantly fighting for supremacy.
Thats what's happening when we have mood swings, existential crisis, our mind changes, we get sick of our partners, we go vegetarian or abandon our diet.
So our schizophrenia of wanting to be happy but hating happy people is due to the modes fighting. As long as we live at the mercy of these modes we will be pushed around from one interest to another. One minute we hate ourselves and others and the next minute we love everything. These modes are why your new year resolution has already failed.
The solution is to be fixed in consciousness.
One who is able to withdraw his senses from sense objects, as the tortoise draws its limbs within the shell, is firmly fixed in perfect consciousness. Bhagavad-Gita AS IT IS
Prabhupada says “The test of a yogī, devotee or self-realized soul is that he is able to control the senses according to his plan. Most people, however, are servants of the senses and are thus directed by the dictation of the senses”
The senses are contaminated by the 3 modes, so if you want to get in the drivers seat of your life rather than being driven crazy by your senses under the modes the solution is clear - Prabhupada says in the next purport
”Unless one is transcendentally situated, it is not possible to cease from sense enjoyment”
So how to be transcendentally situated?
Prabhupada says in his famous purport to the maha mantra:
”Krsna consciousness is not an artificial imposition on the mind; this consciousness is the original energy of the living entity. When we hear the transcendental vibration, this consciousness is revived”
Krsna consciousness is ecstatic!
